Gretchen Stephenson @gretchenstephenson joins me again to talk about the Shooting Ratings tests for Weimaraners. These field events were developed in the 1950s as a way to objectively evaluate the hunting skills of Weimaraners and are put on by the Weimaraner Club of America. AKC's hunting tests for all pointing breeds were actually based on these tests! There are distinct differences, however, which we discuss.

What does collaring a dog away look like?

This video shows collaring a pointing dog away from a bird that has been flushed but not shot with a shotgun. The handler grabs the dog by the collar and physically moves them away from the bird a distance before releasing them again. This is used in several types of field trials.

There’s a bit of an art to it so the dog doesn’t pull or drag you over! 😆

When it’s 99, feels like 107, we gotta do our afternoon walks inside 🥵. Summer used to be my favorite season. Now that I live in NC and have active dogs, it’s become my least favorite. It’s such a pain to be trapped indoors. Thank goodness for dog-friendly stores.

What is a callback retrieve?

These are used in AKC field trials. In a retrieving stake with a callback retrieve, dogs run the course and no birds are shot. After all the dogs have run, the judges “call back” several dogs to see them complete a retrieve. These are the dogs that they are considering for placements.

Call back retrieves seem straightforward, but they can be stressful and dogs often get picked up. Have you ever done a call back retrieve with your dog?

I’m very excited to share that my book, The Accidental Bird Dog: My Journey with an Extraordinary Dog, will be launching soon! It is a memoir about my journey training Zara to be a hunting dog over the past decade. It will be available on Amazon in paperback and ebook format on August 5th.

This book describes how Zara went from a pet to an accomplished bird dog, changing my life in the process, as well as all the ups and downs along the way. Writing and editing this book has been a labor of love over the past few years and I can’t wait to share it with you all.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey, both in regards to helping train Zara as well as those who have assisted with the book editing and launch process. Thank you to all the people who have followed us for years, even though we’ve never met. Thank you for believing in us and being part of our story.
