We are more than halfway through our training season (April to mid-September)!
—
🐦 Fieldwork: This is where I spent the most energy this month. With a lot of retrieving rewards, Zara is backing consistently now. She’s also been super steady in some challenging environments.
🦆 Double Mark Retrieve: We only did this once and I need to spend more time on it in July. But her foundation is solid.
💦 Blind Retrieve: I had some issues transitioning away from the fence but she’s getting pretty good on land now. We’ll be ready for water soon.
🐕 Honor by Blind: She did this perfectly with different dogs. We’ll try it in some more locations.
🚶🏽‍♀️Off-Leash Heeling: This was rough when we went to Keystone NAVHDA last weekend. She was amped and it was hard for her to listen. I’m going to practice with a friend’s Wonder Lead in more high-distraction environments.

The pups and I had a fun whirlwind weekend visitin

The pups and I had a fun whirlwind weekend visiting VA, MD, and PA. We stopped by the Richmond dog shows on Friday and Colombo was Winner’s Dog and Best of Opposite for another point! We spent some time with my family in MD and then headed to PA early Saturday morning to train with @keystonenavhda. On Sunday, we visited @trailside_vizslas and got to see Zara’s nieces and nephews! (No, I’m not getting one). We rounded out the weekend with more training with Jane and Zara’s littermate Benny. Zara did well with her fieldwork this weekend and backed both of her bracemates! I also saw some weaknesses in our training in regards to heeling, so we’ll work on that.

Zara scratched her cornea about 2.5 weeks ago and

Zara scratched her cornea about 2.5 weeks ago and it’s finally about healed. There’s still a small cloudy spot but the vet said that a residual scar like that is normal. You can see it in the second photo if you look closely. Poor pupper. I’ll definitely be using the @rexspecsk9 more to hopefully prevent future injuries.

Yesterday I took Colombo to a coursing ability tes

Yesterday I took Colombo to a coursing ability test and he earned two passes. Unlike lure coursing trials, CATs are non-competitive pass/fail events and open to all breeds. Colombo has always had a strong desire to lure course, but he hasn’t always wanted to follow through and chase the lure for more than a few hundred yards. Proud of him for running the 600-yard course twice yesterday even if he did need a little encouragement! He needs one more pass for a CA title.

Our NAVHDA IT training went well this month. Zara has made a lot of progress although there are still areas for improvement.
—
🐦 Fieldwork: She is solid on her birds and completely steady until touched to retrieve now (yay!). Zara knows how to back other dogs and will do it, but I don’t think she enjoys it and will try to avoid it if possible. 😒 Standing through the retrieve is not the issue - it’s getting her to stop initially. We’ll keep working on it.
🦆 Double Marked Retrieve: We did a few sessions of this and she did really well! I need to add in the distraction decoys this month.
🐕 Honor by Blind: We’ve done this twice and she did fine. Both of the dogs tried to parade the bird past her, which caused her to move a little, but I was able to get some good corrections in.
💦 Blind Retrieve: She’s gotten much better with this! She’s now up to 90 yard blinds on land along a fence. Casting drills are going well too. Hopefully we can transition to water by the end of June if not before.
🚶🏽‍♀️Off-Leash Heeling: This is getting better. I got some good tips from a friend/trainer, so we’ll keep practicing it.
