Zara and I had a successful morning doing some field work with our friend Ozzie and his dog Thor. Zara is looking really good in the field. I’m hopeful she’ll do well at her test in 2 weeks. Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of her on point because I was also shooting.

Back to the training grind! Doing some retrieve drills with dead chukar to clean up any issues before the Utility Test. Ideally I would not be giving her a “come” command, but she was hesitating with the birds so I was trying to nip that in the bud. I think it’s because they were damp and kind of nasty. We’ll practice with freshly shot ones on Sunday. 🐦

I took a short trip to Iowa over the weekend to attend the NAVHDA Invitational, their yearly event that brings together some of the best dogs in the country.

It was quite literally the most fun I’ve had in a while.

I spent time with some of the best people around, watching incredible dog work, supporting members I’ve trained with for years, and experiencing the best of the organization that has made me the bird dog trainer I am today.

On Sunday, while taking some photos of @wesleyeverman’s field run, I was recruited to be one of the official photographers for the event, which gave me access to see the events up close. I am not a professional photographer by any means, but that is the spirit of NAVHDA - giving people the opportunity to step up and help, which allows them to grow and accomplish even more. That is something I have seen continuously in my four years in NAVHDA. (Thank you @t.a.otto for the opportunity!)

It was such an honor to watch so many members of the Tarheel chapter succeed at a high level - whether they earned the title of Versatile Champion or not.

I also thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with @thegwpanddraht, as we explored the roadside attractions of rural Iowa, took random photos, and laughed the whole time.

All of this is why I would love the chance to run Zara at next year’s Invitational in New Mexico. We will know in less than 3 weeks. It’s possible we won’t qualify, and that’s okay. In that case, I may just have to come and spectate again. 😁
